Some Embroidery from Podillian and Hutsul Bukovyna, Ukraine

 

Hella all, 

I came across some embroidery graphs from the early 20th cent, which record Podillian and Hutsul embroideries from Bukovyna. 

Bukovynian Podillia refers to a strip of territory on the south bank of the Dnister where the costume and embroidery has close affinities to that of the northern bank, in Podillia. It is indicated by the blue circled area on the map above. The map is take from 'Traditional Dress of Bukovyna' by Yaroslava Kozholianka. The map includes Zastawna, however some Zastawna embroideries have their own unique style and do not fall within the character of Podillia. Here are a couple of photos from Yaroslava's book. 

The Bukovynian Hutsul region lies in west Bukovyna, and forms the Putyla region, about which I have already written an article. It is circled in red on the map above.
